Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski married her longtime partner, Betty Iverson, on Sunday.

“Yesterday our family was brought together by marriage,” Biskupski wrote in a Facebook post. “We have always been bonded by love, but now we are joined by law.”

“We truly are stronger together,” she added.

The couple, who are raising 11-year-old Jack and 6-year-old Archie, exchanged vows in Millcreek Canyon, a park managed by the U.S. Forest Service.

Jack and Archie participated in the ceremony, which was performed by Kate Kendell, the executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), an LGBT rights advocate. Kendell is a longtime friend of the family.

“Jackie and Betty have known each other for almost 20 years,” Biskupski's office said in a statement announcing the marriage. “They became engaged shortly after the results of the Salt Lake City mayoral race were announced on November 17, 2015.”
