The Dave Matthews Band on Monday
announced that an upcoming show in Charlotte, North Carolina would
benefit organizations defending equality.
The band is set to perform Friday in
Charlotte despite the state's controversial law that prohibits
transgender people from using the bathroom of their choice in
government buildings, including schools. Passage of the law also
blocked Charlotte's LGBT protections ordinance from taking effect.
The band said in a press release that
it would donate a portion of the proceeds from the show to five
organizations.
The American Civil Liberties Union
(ACLU), Lambda Legal, ACLU of North Carolina, Equality NC and Time
Out Youth would receive the proceeds, the band said.
Other artists, including Bruce
Springsteen, Ringo Starr and Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato, have
canceled scheduled shows in the state to protest the law.
