Singer Demi Lovato promoted transgender
rights while performing her hit song Cool for the Summer
during Sunday's Billboard Music Awards.
Lovato's outfit included a symbol used
to support gender-neutral bathrooms.
The 23-year-old singer has previously
expressed support for LGBT rights. Late last month, she and Nick
Jonas canceled several performances in North Carolina to protest
passage of a controversial law that prohibits transgender people from
using the bathroom of their choice in government buildings, including
schools.
“North Carolina's discriminatory HB2
law is extremely disappointing, and it takes away some of the LGBT
community's most basic rights and protections,” Lovato and Jonas
said in a tweet.
Two North Carolina LGBT groups,
Equality NC and Time Out Youth, will receive the proceeds from the
sale of a similar shirt worn Sunday by Lovato, according to GLAAD.
