Singer-guitarist Laura Jane Grace of
the band Against Me! this weekend burned her birth certificate in
protest of a North Carolina law that targets the LGBT community.
Grace, who came out transgender in a
2012 Rolling Stone interview, burned her birth certificate at
the band's Durham show on Sunday.
“Goodbye, gender!” she said as the
document burned.
North Carolina's controversial law
blocks cities from enacting LGBT protections and prohibits
transgender people from using the bathroom of their choice in
government buildings, including schools.
Other artists, including Bruce
Springsteen, Ringo Starr and Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato, have
canceled scheduled shows in the state to protest the law.
