Two Massachusetts students say their marriage proposal at a Ted Cruz rally was a protest against the Republican presidential candidate's opposition to marriage equality.

Arden Jurskis and Kenzy Peach, sophomores at Emerson College, say they staged the marriage proposal.

The students are of the opposite sex, but Peach told The Boston Globe that “it's way more ethical to have two people of the same gender get married than have two college sophomores tie the knot.”

A photo of the students joyfully embracing with Cruz in the background was widely shared on the Internet.

Peach said that she told Jurskis to propose as Cruz approached them during a rally Sunday in Des Moines.

“He gave us the biggest hug I think I have ever received in my entire life,” said Jurskis. (Photo: @ArdenJurskis)
