Designer Nate Berkus told Oprah Winfrey
on Saturday that he immediately knew that he would someday marry
Jeremiah Brent.
Berkus and Brent married in 2014 in New
York. Last year, the couple welcomed their first child, daughter
Poppy Brent-Berkus, who was born via surrogate on March 23.
Appearing on OWN TV's Oprah: Where
Are They Now? Berkus said that Brent came into his life at a time
when he was questioning why all of his relationships ended at about
the three year mark.
“That's when it's a real
relationship,” Winfrey said.
“I decided after my last relationship
ended that I was going to go to therapy and I was going to start
asking questions of myself. And hard questions. And so I did,”
Berkus said.
“I took six moths of a break – no
dates, no dinners, no phone calls, no texting. And at the end of
that six months I had a note from Jeremiah, my husband now who I had
met years prior but we just were friends. And he was coming to New
York and wanted to know if I wanted to get together. And I sort of
said yes and I was sort of coming out of this whole thing and he
walked in the door and I was like, 'Well, this is what I was waiting
for.'”
“You knew then?”
“I knew that minute. I knew within
15 minutes,” he answered.
