Eddie Redmayne and Cate Blanchett are among the actors vying for an Oscar in a leading role category.

Redmayne's portrayal of transgender pioneer Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl won him a best actor nomination. Redmayne won last year's prize for The Theory of Everything.

Also competing in the Best Actor category are Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Matt Damon (The Martian), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Bryan Cranston (Trumbo).

Cate Blanchett is considered the favorite to win this year's Oscar for best actress for her portrayal of Carol in the lesbian romance film of the same name.

Also nominated were Brie Larson (Room), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn), Jennifer Lawrence (Joy) and Charlotte Rampling (45 Years).

Blanchett's Carol co-star Rooney Mara was nominated in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category, which also includes nominees Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs) and Rachel McAdams (Spotlight).

Out singer Sam Smith's James Bond theme Writing On The Wall was nominated for best original song.
