Jackie Biskupski was sworn into office
Monday, making history as Salt Lake City's first openly gay mayor.
Roughly 500 people attended her
swearing in ceremony on the steps of the Salt Lake City County
Building, KSL
reported. She was sworn in by Salt Lake County Presiding Judge
Shauna Graves-Robertson.
Standing by her side was her fiancee,
Becky Iverson.
Biskupski, a Democrat and a former
state legislator, campaigned as the candidate who would listen to
constituents.
“The people of this city are why I
ran my first race,” she told the crowd. “And you are why I am
standing here today. It is for you that I will work every day to
build a city for everyone.”
Biskupski said she was committed to
improving the city's air quality, creating a welcome environment for
business, and rooting out homelessness.
