Olympian Gus Kenworthy says that
closeted athletes have come out to him.
The 24-year-old British-born American
freestyle skier won the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in
Sochi, Russia.
He recently came out gay in a cover
story for ESPN Magazine.
In an interview with Us
Weekly, Kenworthy said that he's been “blown away” by the
support he's received since coming out.
“I was worried that I'd be known as
'the gay skier' … and everything else about me would be
overlooked,” he explained. “I have a big fan base of young
girls, and I didn't want to disappoint them.”
“I was blown away by the support, and
it's insane how many people have come out to me – even closeted
athletes.”
“I feel like I'm helping battle gay
stereotypes, because I compete in a rugged action sport,” Kenworthy
said.
He added that he's attracted to
“masculine guys” such as actors Tom Hardy and Matt Bomer.
