Laverne Cox will appear as Dr.
Frank-N-Furter in Fox's upcoming remake of The Rocky Horror
Picture Show.
According to Deadline
Hollywood, Fox will premiere its reimagining of the cult classic
next fall.
Tim Curry pioneered the role of Dr.
Frank-N-Furter, a self-proclaimed “sweet transvestite from
Transsexual, Transylvania,” in the original Broadway production and
the 1975 20th Century Fox movie.
Cox made history last year as the first
transgender actor to receive an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of
transgender inmate Sophia Burset on the Netflix comedy Orange is
The New Black. Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word, a
documentary on transgender youth Cox hosted and produced for MTV and
Logo TV, won a Daytime Emmy Award.
Lou Adler, who produced the film
version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and its follow-up, Shock Treatment, and Broadway producer Gail Berman
will serve as executive producers on the Fox version. Kenny Ortega
(High School Musical, This Is It, Hocus Pocus) will serve as
the film's director and choreographer.
