Salt Lake City is considering naming a
street in the memory of slain politician and gay rights activist
Harvey Milk.
According to the AP, the proposal,
which the city could act on before the end of the year, calls for
placing Harvey Milk Boulevard near streets named for civil rights
icons such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Cesar Chavez.
“We've had so many tremendous
victories this year alone, and I think Harvey really set the tone for
the LGBT movement – how to be successful and organize us
politically,” Troy Williams, executive director of Equality Utah,
is quoted as saying by the AP.
Milk was the first openly gay elected
official of a major U.S. City. He was elected to the San Francisco
Board of Supervisors in 1977 on a pledge to back gay and lesbian
rights. The following year, Milk was killed by Dan White, a former
supervisor.
Salt Lake City is home to The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is strongly opposed to
marriage equality.
