Republican presidential candidate Mike
Huckabee this week called for a boycott of Frito-Lay over its
LGBT-affirming “Rainbow Doritos.”
Frito-Lay sold out of the cool
ranch-flavored corn chips in one day, raising $100,000 for the It
Gets Better Project, a group that helps troubled LGBT teens.
According
to Time,
Huckabee has “called on Christians to boycott all snacks made by”
Frito Lay and demanded that the company apologize for its partnership
with the It Gets Better Project and its co-founder Dan Savage,
described by Huckabee as an “anti-Christian bully.”
Huckabee, Time reported, acted
at the behest of Republican organizer David Lane, an outspoken
opponent of LGBT rights.
“[Savage is] promoting an agenda that
we believe will collapse America,” Lane said. “Homosexuals used
to have a libertarian position: 'let me do what we do in the privacy
of my own home.' They've moved into a totalitarian position.:
'you're going to participate in our weddings, or we're going to
bankrupt you.' The next step is fascism: 'you're going to cheer at
our weddings, or we're going to put you in jail.'”
Savage disagreed, saying that “Rainbow
Doritos,” or a “gay bag of chips,” as he put it, doesn't “limit
anyone else's religious freedom.”
“You don't have a right to live in a
world without bags of gay chips, and it doesn't infringe on anyone's
private beliefs of practices if there's a bag of gay chips out
there,” he told Time.
Right
Wing Watch notes that in calling for a day of support for
Chick-Fil-A in 2012, Huckabee described a boycott against the chicken
chain as “economic terrorism” and said that he would never
support a boycott of Starbucks, Apple or Amazon based on the
gay-affirming politics of their leaders.
