Christian conservative group the
American Family Association (AFA) on Tuesday placed a full-page ad in
The Washington Post calling on the Supreme Court not to strike
down state bans on gay marriage.
The nation's highest court will hear
arguments in a case challenging bans in Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and
Tennessee on April 28, with a ruling expected sometime in June.
The ad features a photo of
Michelangelo's fresco painting The Creation of Adam from the
Sistine Chapel along with the caption: “As you deliberate on
marriage, remember whose idea it was in the first place.”
“Before you now is a great challenge:
If your decision to resolve this matter forces same-sex marriage on
America, you will have settled nothing,” the
ad states. “We urge the Court to adjudicate rightly that which
is God's alone to decide.”
AFA President Tim Wildmon appeared on
Bryan Fischer's Focal Point radio show to discuss the ad.
“If the Supreme Court does this and
foists unnatural quote marriage on all of America, it will be an
incredible constitutional injustice,” he
said. “It'll represent more of a power grab by the federal
bench. And it'll be a fist in the face of God Almighty.”
