Michael Sam revealed in a new documentary that he and boyfriend Vito Cammisano once broke up but reunited over Christmas.

In the OWN film Michael Sam broadcast for the first time on Saturday, Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL, said that his relationship with Cammisano has had its ups and downs.

The couple met at a lingerie party during Sam's freshman year at the University of Missouri.

Cammisano, a star swimmer, was dressed as a rabbit as he violently puked over a railing.

“I said, 'Hey, hey, are you okay? Can I get you something?” Sam explained in the film. “Vito slowly raised up and looked at me. I'll never forget how those eyes looked at me. He's like, 'Get he f away from me!' … I was about to beat up Vito that night.”

The men didn't speak for two years. Then, after Cammisano came out, they started dating.

“Early on, it was awesome,” Sam said. “And then bad things started to happen.”

A closeted Sam asked Cammisano to keep their relationship a secret.

“When Vito came to my house, he had to sneak through in and out of the window. Vito was getting really tired of that,” Sam said.

The men broke up and didn't speak for a few months.

When Cammisano found out that Sam didn't have anywhere to go for Christmas, he invited him to his home.

“So Mickey came to Kansas City for Christmas and that's when [we realized] we missed this,” Cammisano said. “It really was Christmas that brought us back together.”
