Elton John and husband David Furnish
said this week that they were overwhelmed by the positive response
they've received to their wedding.
The couple, together 21 years,
exchanged vows at their home in Windsor, Berkshire, South England on
Sunday.
Their two sons, Zachary, 3, and Elijah,
who turns 2 next month, attended the ceremony.
John and Furnish, a filmmaker, entered
a civil partnership in 2005. While gay couples started marrying in
Britain in the spring, those in a civil partnership had to wait until
last week, when it became legal to convert civil partnerships to
marriage.
John posted a photo on Instagram of
newspaper coverage of his nuptials along with a message of gratitude.
“We're utterly overwhelmed by and
overjoyed by all the kind messages of support we've received from
people around the world. Massive thanks to everyone from the bottom
of our hearts!” John wrote.
“We're grateful and privileged to
live in a country where it isn't illegal to be gay and where marriage
equality is a reality. Let's all stand up for LGBT people living
around the world who deserve the same rights. #ShareTheLove,” he
added.
