Comedian Lily Tomlin claims in a The
Washington Post profile that she never hid her sexuality.
Still, Tomlin didn't publicly
acknowledge her more than four-decade relationship with Jane Wagner
until recently.
Tomlin and Wagner married on New Year's
Eve in New York.
“We upped and did it,” Tomlin, 75,
said. “We thought we should get married because we can.”
On coming out publicly, Tomlin told
the paper: “I never did not come out.”
She added that she wanted to be
acknowledged for her work, not “be that gay person who does
comedy.”
Acknowledged for her work she will be
on Sunday, when she'll receive a Kennedy Center Honor recognizing her
nearly half-century-long career.
“What I'd like to see is a big stream
of gay drag artists come out as Ernestine,” she said of her hopes
for her segment.
