Televangelist Pat Robertson warned Tuesday that gays are demanding Christians “have open sex with anybody” or leave, just like those in Sodom.

Robertson made his comments after a 700 Club report about a Colorado baker fighting for the right to refuse to sell wedding cakes to gay and lesbian couples because it violates his Christian faith. (Colorado recognizes gay couples with civil unions, though one county continues to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.)

“The name of this stuff is sodomy,” Robertson told viewers. “And it has to do with the city named Sodom that was given over to all kinds of perverse sex practices, they even wanted to have sex with angels. And God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.”

“What our civil rights commissions and others are saying is, 'We want to endanger our society and set it up for the judgment of God and if you Christians don't like it, then get out.'”

“That gentleman out in Colorado likes his business, he's been in business for a long time,” Robertson continued. “What the gays are saying is, 'We're going to drive you out of town. Either you conform to us or you must leave.' That's the message that's being put out. It's the same message that there was in Sodom and Gomorrah: 'You're either going to have sex with angels or have open sex with anybody or else you leave, or you go out of business. That's America, you don't wand that, do you?” (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)

Theologians, however, are not uniformly in agreement that the sin of Sodom was homosexuality. Many, if not most, explain that Sodom's sin was instead neglect of needy travelers.
