Producers behind To Be Takei, the documentary on the life of actor George Takei, on Monday released a trailer for the upcoming film.

To Be Takei premiered to wide acclaim at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

The film, directed by Jennifer Kroot (It Came From Kuchar), takes a look at Takei's journey from spending part of his childhood in a World War II internment camp to manning the helm of the Starship Enterprise. After publicly coming out gay in 2005, Takei married his partner Brad Altman in California and went on to become an LGBT rights advocate.

The film's trailer also includes brief clips of interviews with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig – all of whom worked with Takei on Star Trek. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)

To Be Takei premieres July 3 on DIRECTV and will run on the platform through August 5. The film opens in limited release on Friday, August 22. It will also be available the same day on iTunes and other VOD sites.
