The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) has
postponed a planned documentary on Michael Sam, the first openly gay
football player to be drafted by the NFL.
According to the AP, OWN executives
altered course after meeting with the St. Louis Rams.
“After careful consideration and
discussion with the St. Louis Rams, 'The Untitled Michael Sam
Project' has been postponed,” OWM President Erik Logan said in a
statement, “allowing Michael the best opportunity to achieve his
dream of making the team.”
The 24-year-old All-American defensive
end from Missouri was drafted last week in the final round of the NFL
draft and faces a steep incline to make the Rams.
“This [postponement] will allow for
Michael to have a total focus on football, and will ensure no
distractions to his teammates,” said Cameron Weiss, Sam's agent.
“Everybody involved remains committed to this project and
understands its historical importance as well as its positive
message.”
