Debby Boone was among the celebrities
who attended Saturday's 25th annual Gay & Lesbian
Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards at the Beverly
Hilton in Los Angeles.
GLAAD handed out honors to Jennifer
Lopez and Laverne
Cox at the event.
Speaking to Traipsing Thru Films at the
event's red carpet, Boone, whose father Pat Boone has publicly spoken
out against gay rights, said she and he husband were attending the
event with a lesbian couple.
“I'm really happy to be here in
support of GLAAD, because I am one of the people that has made the
transition from an old way of thinking to a new one. And I think
that's really the crux of what GLAAD is all about.”
When asked what had happened to change
her mind, she answered: “I have really good friends and family
members that have changed my mind. And the couple that we're with
tonight is a lesbian couple who attended the church where my husband
was associate rector.”
Boone, 57, said that getting to know
gay people had “shifted the way I grew up thinking.”
“And it was a tough transition, you
know. And it is for a lot of people. So, I think I have compassion
for both sides,” she added. (The video is embedded on this page.
