The Roman Catholic Church in Argentina has baptized the daughter of a lesbian couple.

According to CNN, Umma Azul was baptized on Saturday at the cathedral in Cordoba by Archbishop Carlos Jose Nanez.

The baby's godmother is President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who signed the nation's gay marriage law in 2010. Kirchner was unable to attend the blessing but sent a representative in her place.

Carina Villarroel and Soledad Ortiz, the baby's mothers, approached Nanez for the blessing.

Ortiz, the child's birthmother, said she asked Kirchner to be the godmother as a way “to thank her and former President Nestor Kirchner for the law that gave us rights.”

Ortiz told reporters that the couple is planing a church wedding.

“We imagined this moment together. This entire moment, right now. Even more, we're awaiting a wedding, now. We want a wedding for the two of us. After our daughter's baptism, we want a wedding,” Ortiz said.
