A Republican candidate for governor from Oregon has likened gay marriage to murder.

Lorraine Mae Rafferty told The Oregonian in a videotaped interview that she opposes marriage equality because it's a sin.

“I definitely believe that that is wrong,” she said of allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. “I believe it's a sin, just the same as murder is a sin.”

On the issue of abortion, she said: “I believe that would be murder. … A baby in the womb is a human being.”

Rafferty, who is from the tiny town of Selma, Oregon, has never held elective office and said she considers herself to be the state's most conservative gubernatorial candidate.

She is one of six candidates vying for the Republican nomination.
