Grammy Award-winning Beninoise
singer-songwriter Angelique Kidjo says growing anti-gay sentiment in
Africa is about power.
The 53-year-old Kidjo, who Time
Magazine called “Africa's premiere diva,” was asked by CNN
anchor Christiane Amanpour about increasing intolerance on the
continent.
“The homosexual issue has been
brought up by a religious group in Africa,” Kidjo answered.
“Because we have homosexual for centuries in Africa and nobody talk
about it. And what baffles me and what make[s] me angry is when
people on the name of god, on the name of religion, stir hate. What
kind of god are you praying [to]? It's not mine.”
“Why now? It's not about god, it's
about power. That's it. That's the simple truth,” she added.
