Nelson Piquet Jr. has been fined $10,000 by NASCAR for using an anti-gay slur on social media.

Piquet, who drives for Turner Scott Motorsports, commented on a photo that Nationwide Series driver Parker Kligerman posted of himself on Instagram: “Fag.”

The 28-year-old Piquet has also been ordered to attend sensitivity training, the AP reported.

“Nelson Piquet Jr. recently communicated an offensive and derogatory term that cannot be tolerated in our sport,” said Steve O'Donnell, senior vice president of racing operations at NASCAR.

Piquet, a 28-year-old driver from Brazil and the son of three-time Formula One world champion Nelson Piquet, apologized in a statement.

“I sincerely apologize to everyone for my poor choice of words last week. I did not mean to hurt or offend anyone. This has been a cultural learning experience that will make me a more sensitive person moving forward,” he said.
