Bertolli has released a gay-inclusive image on social media as rival pasta maker Barilla faces a backlash over anti-gay comments made by its president.

The image features diverse families of pasta making their way into a bowl of tomato sauce. Males are represented by penne pasta, while farfalle, commonly known as bow-tie, represent the females.

“Love and pasta for all!” reads the caption on the image, which appeared on Bertolli Germany's Facebook page.

“We just wanted to spread the news that Bertolli welcomes everyone, especially those with an empty stomach,” a rep for Orca im Hafen, Bertolli's social-media agency in Germany, told AdFreak, an AdWeek.com blog.

Barilla President Guido Barilla's comments that gays will never appear in Barilla ads have also fueled calls for a boycott of the brand.
