Former President George H. W. Bush and his wife Barbara served as
official witnesses at the wedding of a lesbian couple on Saturday.
The Bushes attended the Maine wedding of Bonnie Clement and Helen
Thorgalsen, co-owners of a Kennebunk general store.
“Getting our marriage license witnessed!” Thorgalsen captioned
a photograph on Facebook of Mr. Bush signing a document.
Jim McGrath, a spokesman for the former president, confirmed that
the Bushes attended the wedding.
“They were private citizens attending a private ceremony for two
friends,” McGrath told The
Washington Post.
Clement, 60, told the paper that she and Thorgalsen, 55, have been
together 12 years and were long-time friends of the Bushes.
“This is such a wonderful time for change in our legal system,”
Clement said. “Who would be best to help us acknowledge the
importance of our wedding as our friends and as the former leader of
the free world. When they agreed to do so we just felt that it was
the next acknowledgment of being 'real and normal.”
