On his Daily Show faux news program, comedian Jon Stewart joked that Bill de Blasio was a shoo-in to become New York City's next mayor because, among things, he can turn gay people straight.

De Blasio is the public advocate who seems likely to win the Democratic mayoral nomination despite a possible runoff with Bill Thompson, who finished second in last week's Democratic primary.

In a 1979 ESSENSE essay titled I Am a Lesbian, Chirlane McCray, de Blasio's wife, discussed coming out gay.

“There's de Blasio's wife, Chirlane McCray,” Stewart told viewers, “who, and this is true, until she met her husband Bill de Blasio was an avowed lesbian, which we know from her 1979 ESSENSE magazine article I Am a Lesbian. This is why de Blasio can win in the general election. The Democrats love him because he's an old fashioned New York progressive. And the Republicans love him because he can turn gay people straight.”

“What's better than that?” Stewart rhetorically asked to a round of applause.
