A gay male couple together more than 20 years are the first to
marry at a Veterans Home in Chula Vista, California.
John Banvard, a 95-year-old World War II veteran, and Gerard
Nadeau, a 68-year-old Vietnam veteran, exchanged vows on Thursday at
the V.A. Home where the two have lived together for the past three
and a half years.
“It was something we wanted to do for a long time,” Banvard
told San Diego ABC
affiliate 10News. “After 20 years, we decided we wanted to get
married but we had to wait until the Supreme Court said it was OK.”
A few fellow residents objected to the ceremony and contacted the
controversial Westboro Baptist Church, which coined the phrase “God
hates fags,” in an attempt to derail the wedding. However, none of
those who objected attended the brief wedding.
