John Cena and the WWE on Thursday applauded WWE superstar Darren
Young on coming out gay.
The 29-year-old Young came out in the course of being asked how
the WWE would react if a wrestler came out gay and whether a gay
wrestler could succeed in the sport.
“Absolutely,” Young told a TMZ.com
cameraman Wednesday at a Los Angeles airport terminal. “Look at
me. I'm a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I'll tell you
right now, I'm gay. And I'm happy. I'm very happy.”
“I know Darren personally,” Cena told TMZ. “Darren is a
great guy. And that's a very bold move for him. And congratulations
for him for actually finally doing it. Good for him. It doesn't
affect his work. He's a wonderful worker in the ring.”
The WWE agreed in a statement: “On TMZ this morning, WWE
Superstar Darren Young revealed to the WWE Universe that he is gay.
WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and
we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact,
Darren will be participating in one of our Be A STAR anti-bullying
rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive
environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual
orientation.”
