Spanish-language network Univision this week aired its first gay
wedding on the popular soap opera Amores Verdaderos (True
Loves).
Estefano Longoria Aradane (played by Archie Lanfranco) and Jean
Marie Bonjour (Ruben Branco) married in a civil ceremony. At the
last minute, Estefano's mother decides to attend the wedding, saying
that her role is to be by her son's side at this moment. (The video

LGBT rights advocate GLAAD called the episode “historic.”
“This moment was historic on many levels,” the
group wrote in a blog post. “It was the first time a gay
wedding aired in a novela produced and distributed by Mexico's
largest – and notoriously conservative – media conglomerate
Televisa.”
According to GLAAD, the episode aired in Mexico nearly three
months ago.
While Mexico City legalized gay nuptials nearly 4 years ago, a
recent Supreme Court ruling is paving the way for its broader
adoption throughout Mexico.
