In an audio clip from the 1970s, President Richard Nixon accuses the sitcom All in the Family of glorifying homosexuality and claims that it will destroy society.

In the clip, Nixon discusses stumbling onto the show.

“They had two magnificent, handsome guys – and a stupid old fellow in it. They were glorifying homosexuality!” Nixon said.

White House Chief of Staff Harry Robbins “Bob” Haldeman, better known as H.R. Haldeman, corrected the president when he assumed the show was a movie.

“No, that's a regular show, it's on every week,” Haldeman said.

“The point that I make is that goddamnit, I do not think that you glorify, on public television, homosexuality. You know what happened to the Greeks. Homosexuality destroyed them. Sure Aristotle was a homo, we all know that. So was Socrates.”

“The last six Roman emperors were fags. You see, homosexuality, immorality in general, these are the enemies of strong societies. That's why the Communists and the left-wingers are pushing it. They're trying to destroy us,” Nixon added. (The audio is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)
