Texas Representative Louie Gohmert, a
Republican, has called the Supreme Court majority that struck down
the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) “the most ignorant people
walking around in Washington.”
The high court last month gutted DOMA,
saying that the law which prohibited federal agencies from
recognizing the legal marriages of gay and lesbian couples was
unconstitutional.
“The court said, and I quote, the
principle purpose of DOMA is to impose inequality, not for other
reasons like governmental efficiency,” Gohmert
said in talking to Janet Porter. “That is the Supreme Court
majority opinion saying that. That the whole reason for the Defense
of Marriage was to impose inequality. Well, if these people believe
that, they are the most ignorant people walking around in Washington.
And that's saying something. So they either lied or they're just
totally ignorant.”
He added that America is doomed because
“countries don't last very long after you reach the point where
their highest level of government is being dishonest [and] we're
there.” (The video is embedded on this page. Visit
