Actor Cory Monteith, who is best known for playing Finn Hudson on the Fox musical-comedy Glee, is dead at the age of 31.

Monteith was found dead in his hotel room in Vancouver by hotel staff who checked on the star after he failed to check out on time, according to ABC NEWS.

“The deceased has been identified as 31-year-old actor Cory Monteith,” a Vancouver police spokesman said, “who achieved great fame on the popular TV series Glee.”

Vancouver police said that the cause of death was not immediately apparent but ruled out foul play.

Monteith had spoken openly about his lifelong battle with substance abuse, which he said started at the age of 13. He had voluntarily checked himself into a treatment center in April.

He is survived by his parents and older brother.

Monteith had been a strong advocate for gay rights. His favorite charities included The Trevor Project and Straight But Not Narrow.
