Kinky Boots, the Broadway
musical adaptation of the 2005 British comedy film, picked up six
trophies at Sunday's Tony Awards.
The show, which tells the story of a
young man who turns around a shoe factory when he teams up with a
drag queen, earned a season-high 13 nominations.
Kinky Boots won best musical,
edging out Matilda the Musical, considered the front-runner,
and scored wins for Billy Porter's lead performance and Cyndi
Lauper's music and lyrics.
“I gotta thank my mom for sharing all
that wonderful music,” Lauper said in accepting her award. “I
wrecked all her Broadway musicals when I was a kid, the cast albums.
That's how I learned how to sing.”
“And I want to thank Broadway for
welcoming me,” she added, tearfully.
Harvey Fierstein also received a
nomination for writing the book for the musical.
Neil Patrick Harris returned for his
fourth turn as Tony Awards host and opened the show with an amazing
musical number which included a disappearing magic trick and a cameo
from Mike Tyson.
