Author-activist Dan Savage argues that
straight marriage is more likely than gay marriage to lead to
polygamy.
Savage, a co-founder of the It Gets
Better Project, made his remarks during a wide-ranging interview with
HuffPost Live.
“When people talk about, you know,
gay marriage is going to lead to polygamy, it's going to lead to
incest they're just throwing up smokescreens,” Savage said. “You
know, straight marriage, most polygamist societies and most marriage
throughout history has been polygamist – one man, many wives –
has been heterosexual.”
“So, if anything puts us on the
slippery slope to polygamy, it's heterosexual marriage. We want to
protect ourselves from polygamy, ban straight marriage, because it
has historically led to polygamy. And the same thing with incest.
Most incest that goes on is heterosexuals. We want to protect the
world from incest, we need to stop straight people from having sex
