The American Civil Liberties Union
(ACLU) wants to see the characters played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and
Eric Stonestreet on Modern Family marry on the ABC Wednesday
night sitcom.
The ACLU has launched a campaign to
marry Mitchell Pritchett (played by Ferguson) and Cameron Tucker
(Stonestreet), who are raising their daughter Lily.
“The freedom to marry is being
advanced in American living rooms as much as in court rooms,”
Anthony D. Romero, executive director of ACLU, said in a statement.
“As we wait for the Supreme Court to
rule, we want to keep this issue on the minds and screens of
Americans everywhere,” he added, a reference to two cases before
the Supreme Court related to gay marriage.
“The ACLU has been working since 1936
to guarantee the rights of lesbian and gay people, and we see sending
Cam and Mitch down the aisle before 13 million American viewers as
the perfect next step,” Romero said.
The pitch, however, comes too late as
ABC will air the show's season finale next week and the high court is
expected hand down its decisions next month.
“Love this!” Ferguson tweeted.
“Thank you ACLU! Maybe once Prop 8 is overturned!”
