Web series My Best Gay Friends is a hit in conservative Vietnam.

The show follows the lives of three people sharing an apartment in southern Ho Chi Minh City.

Creator Huynh Nguyen Dang Khoa told the AFP that he was surprised by the show's success.

“I thought it would only interest Vietnam's gay community – but we're hearing that parents, grandparents, whole families watch and love the shows, and long for new episodes.”

Khoa, 22, cast mostly friends and shoots the low-budget series with a digital SLR camera.

The series' premiere episode has been viewed more than 1.5 million times on YouTube.com.

“I wanted to show people that homosexuals have ordinary lives, full of emotion, friends, family – very normal lives,” Khoa said.

In episode nine, the most recent episode, the show tackles the issue of marriage equality, and Cindy Thai Tai, a famous transgender singer, makes an appearance. (The video, with English subtitles, is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)
