Howard Kurtz and the Daily Beast have parted ways over an erroneous claim that Jason Collins did not disclose that he was once engaged to a woman.

Collins is the NBA player who on Monday announced that he is gay.

Kurtz wrote in column titled Jason Collins' Other Secret that the 34-year-old NBA free agent had failed to disclose his 8-year relationship with Carolyn Moos. A later version of the story stated that Collins had “downplayed” the subject.

“In his original blog post, Kurtz incorrectly stated that Collins 'didn't come clean' about the engagement,” the Daily Beast wrote in a correction. “In an amended version, Kurtz added that Collins 'downplayed' the engagement and 'didn't dwell on it.' The Daily Beast sincerely regrets Kurtz's error – and any implication that Collins attempted to hide or obscure the engagement.”

Newsweek/Daily Beast Editor in Chief Tina Brown announced the decision to split with Kurtz, the host of CNN's Reliable Sources, which takes a critical look at the news media.
