Howard Kurtz and the Daily Beast
have parted ways over an erroneous claim that Jason Collins did not
disclose that he was once engaged to a woman.
Collins is the NBA player who on Monday
announced that he is gay.
Kurtz wrote in column titled Jason
Collins' Other Secret that the 34-year-old NBA free agent had
failed to disclose his 8-year relationship with Carolyn Moos. A
later version of the story stated that Collins had “downplayed”
the subject.

Moos, Jason Collins' ex-fiancee: I invested 8 years.)
“In his original blog post, Kurtz
incorrectly stated that Collins 'didn't come clean' about the
engagement,” the Daily Beast wrote in a correction. “In
an amended version, Kurtz added that Collins 'downplayed' the
engagement and 'didn't dwell on it.' The Daily Beast
sincerely regrets Kurtz's error – and any implication that Collins
attempted to hide or obscure the engagement.”
Newsweek/Daily Beast Editor in
Chief Tina Brown announced the decision to split with Kurtz, the host
of CNN's Reliable Sources, which takes a critical look at the
news media.
