Go-Go's singer Belinda Carlisle has said she cannot imagine having a straight son.

Carlisle's 20-year-old actor son James Duke Mason appeared in the 2012 film What Happens Next and the upcoming Disappear Here. Mason has previously said he came out gay to his family and friends at the age of 14.

When gay glossy The Advocate asked, “Would you say you've always been accepting of the LGBT community or was it something that evolved for you over time?” Carlisle answered: “No, I've always been.”

She continued: “In high school my best friend was gay – in the closet, but gay. In fact, most of my friends have always been gay or lesbian and I have a gay son – I can't imagine that being any other way. I can't imagine having a straight son. So it's something I've never really thought about.”

Carlisle, however, admitted that finding out her son was gay was “shocking.”

“[W]hen he told me I was still shocked. It wasn't that it was bad, but the first thing I thought about was what he would be up against as a gay person,” she explained. “It's getting better, but it still has a long way to go. I'm one of the most gay-friendly people you'll meet – 100% gay-friendly – and still, when it's you own child it's still something to think about and it's a pretty heavy thing.”
