Apple CEO Tim Cook tops gay glossy
Out's seventh annual Power 50 list for a third year.
Cook returns to the top spot in this
year's list of most influential gay people after taking over the
reins as CEO from the late Steve Jobs.
“When Cook took charge of the tech
giant in late 2011, many regarded the enigmatic successor with
skepticism,” editors
wrote. “But over the past year, the CEO has guided Apple
through significant upgrades on all of the company's product lines
and led the brand's market share to increase to 20% of all money
spent on U.S. consumer technology, up 2% from 2011. And did we
mention Cook sat next to Michelle Obama at the State of the Union
address?”
Ellen DeGeneres, who topped the list
three years ago, earned a second place finish for a second year.
DeGeneres announced in 1997 that she was gay on the cover of Time
and married actress Portia de Rossi (now Portia Lee James
DeGeneres) in 2008.
Ryan Murphy, the creator of Fox's Glee,
NBC's The New Normal and FX's American Horror Story,
received a third place finish.
In fourth place was MSNBC host Rachel
Maddow. And another cable news anchor, Anderson Cooper, rounded out
the top 5.
New additions to the list include drag
queen RuPaul (50), statistician Nate Silver (6), musician Frank Ocean
(10), music mogul Clive Davis (42) and former Pittsburgh Pirates CEO
Kevin McClatchy (30).
