Magic Johnson's support for his gay son
has been criticized by Bill Johnson of the American Decency
Association, a Christian conservative group opposed to gay rights.
Earlier this week, Earvin “EJ”
Johnson III, a 20-year-old student at New York University, was
spotted by a TMZ.com film crew in Los Angeles with his boyfriend.
Magic Johnson told TMZ.com that he
asked his son as a teen whether he was gay.
“And I told him, 'Look, I'm going to
love you regardless. Just let me know, are you or aren't you?' And
then finally, he just said, 'Yes, I am,'” Johnson
said.
The basketball legend added that his
son's coming out was “a good moment for us as a family and a
greater moment for him.”
“Would you be proud to hear that your
loved one had chosen a life that God calls an abomination?” Bill
Johnson wrote. “Maybe if you yourself had lived a life of
reprobation – and yourself had lost the ability to think and act
morally any longer.”
“If Magic Johnson says he's proud of
his son for being a homosexual does his statement make it right in
your heart and mind?”
“And the sin of homosexuality DOES
damage! You could provide your accounts as well – multiple,
multiple accounts but somehow we seldom to never hear these accounts.
Do you? We just see Magic Johnson types with their 'warm smiles'
saying all is well and I’m proud. GAY PRIDE.”
“Other societies have turned their
backs upon God. That's what America is doing – substituting the
truth for a lie.”
“I have been loved, even when I have
done wrong. I have and I will do the same. But I will never say
that I am proud of an act or a behavior that dishonors God and
degrades His people,” Johnson concluded.
