Newark Mayor Cory Booker on Sunday delivered an impassioned plea for gay marriage, saying millions of Americans are being treated as second-class citizens.

Appearing on an ABC News This Week panel moderated by George Stephanopoulos discussing two cases before the Supreme Court related to marriage equality, Booker urged the court to act against such bans.

“Look, this is an anguished reality where we have a second-class citizenship for millions, and millions of Americans who are denied over 1,000 laws,” said Booker. “Thank God we didn't wait on the states on women's equality under the law. Thank God we didn't wait for the states on African Americans' equality under the law. Thank God we didn't wait on the states on inter(racial) marriage.”

Jeff Zeleny, senior Washington correspondent for ABC News, noted that for Democrats it has become politically “dangerous” not to endorse marriage equality.

“Democrats are not doing this because they've suddenly come to this position – most of them believe that already. But it's politically feasible and popular for them to do it. In fact it's dangerous for them not to do it,” Zeleny said. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)
