Duff Goldman, who appears on cabler
Food Network's Ace of Cakes, has offered to make a wedding
cake for a lesbian couple who were refused service by an Oregon
baker.
Aaron Klein, the owner of Sweet Cakes
by Melissa in Gresham, declined to make a cake for the women on
January 17.
“My first question is what's the
wedding date,” Klein said of the mother and daughter who showed up
at his store. “My next question is bride and groom's name … the
girl giggled a little bit and said it's two brides.”
Klein told local media that he and his
wife do not bake cakes for gay weddings because it goes against their
religious beliefs.
Goldman, the 38-year-old executive chef
of the Baltimore-based Charm City Cakes shop which is featured on Ace
of Cakes, offered to bake and transport a wedding cake for the
women free of charge.
“For a cake decorator to really feel
like he really needed to take a stand … it just makes absolutely no
sense,” Goldman told The
Huffington Post. “It's petty, it's small … this man has
wrapped up his hatred in the cloak of religion.”
The Oregon Department of Justice is
investigating allegation that the Kleins violated a state law which
prohibits discrimination in places of public accommodation.
