The creative forces behind the new
Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra on Friday discussed the
movie.
Matt Damon plays Scott Thorson opposite
Michael Douglas as Liberace in the upcoming film from premium cabler
HBO.
At a Television Critics Association
(TCA) panel, Damon said the couple's dynamic in the film was
believable.
“There are aspects of their
relationship that were absurd, but for me it just kind of pointed out
that there are aspects of all our lives that are absurd, they're just
not absurd to us because they're our lives,” Damon said. “Their
relationship – [screenwriter Richard LaGravenese] so got this
dynamic. Whether this was the actual dynamic or not, I completely
believed what he'd written and those aspects of the power dynamic.”
Asked if he found Douglas as Liberace
attractive, Damon answered, “very, very attractive.”
Director Steven Soderbergh said every
single studio turned down the film before HBO agree to back it.
“They said it was too gay,”
Soderbergh
said. “This is after Brokeback Mountain by the way. I
was stunned. It made no sense to any of us. Nobody would make it.
Went to everybody in town.”
“I'm really glad we ended up at HBO
because I think ultimately more people will see it and that's all we
care about,” he added.
