Romantic-comedy Gayby has a
December 11 DVD due date.
Gayby
premiered in March at the South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival in
Austin, Texas. It has gone on to win numerous festival prizes.
The film centers on Jenn (played by
Jenn Harris), a 30-something “warm” yoga instructor who calls on
her gay best friend Matt (Matthew Wilkas, Spider-Man: Turn Off the
Dark) to make good on a youthful pledge to make a baby together.
Matt agrees to have a “gayby” with
Jenn, but Jenn wants to have a baby through natural conception, which
leads to awkward sex between the best friends. The cast also
includes Adam Driver (Girls) as Matt's co-worker and Dule Hill
(Psych) as Jenn's online date. (A trailer for the film is
embedded on this page. Visit
our video library for more videos.)
Gayby was written and directed
by Jonathan Lisecki, who is openly gay. He also plays Nelson, Matt's
dry-witted friend. Of the character, Lisecki told The New York
Times: “[I]t's a witty, acerbic gay best friend who actually is
sexualized and not some kind of weirdo asexual, or only there to help
the straight person get along.”
