Benjamin Norris, the winner of the
reality show Big Brother Australia, proposed marriage to his
boyfriend during the show's finale.
The 32-year-old Norris is the first
openly gay person to win the reality contest. He received $250,000
and a brand new Holden Cruze for outlasting his roommates on Big
Brother 9.
During the live finale, Benjamin was
joined by his boyfriend Ben just moments after being crowned the
winner.
While reaching into his pocket,
Benjamin told Ben that he took something into the house with him.
Fishing out a ring box, he fell on bended knee as the audience
cheered wildly.
“Will you marry me?” Benjamin
asked.
“Yes,” Ben screamed back.
“This was a diamond that my great
grandfather bought for my great grandmother,” Benjamin explained.
“And it was worn on my parent's wedding day. So it's something
that is a part of my family. Since I met Ben all I've wanted was for
him to be a part of my family.”
“And no one is going to tell us that
sitting on the couch at the end of the day alone that we're not
married,” he added, a reference to the fact that marriage equality
is not legal in Australia. (The video is embedded on this page.
