Actor-comedian-author Stephen Fry has said no animal species except human beings have exhibited homophobic behavior.

The 55-year-old Fry, who is openly gay, makes his claim in a 3-minute video in support of the UK government's plan to legalize gay marriage by 2015.

“At least 260 species of animal have been noted exhibiting homosexual behavior,” Fry says. “But only one species of animal ever so far as we know – and I would be fascinated if anyone could prove me wrong – has exhibited homophobic behavior. And that's the human being. So ask yourself, which is really natural?”

“Think about it. Go with your heart,” he adds.

In the video, Fry also discounts the claims of opponents that churches would be forced to marry gay couples against their wishes.

“It's not true. The people who run churches or synagogues or mosques are not forced to marry previously divorced people, for example; it's a very good analogy. It's entirely up to them, if it goes against their faith.” (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)
