Political commentator Margaret Hoover
believes legalizing marriage for gay and lesbian couples is a matter
of freedom, not fairness.
The 34-year-old Hoover, who is the
great-granddaughter of former President Herbert Hoover, made her
comments in a new video for The Four 2012, the nascent group working
on marriage equality issues in the four states where it will be on
the ballot this year – Maryland, Minnesota, Maine and Washington
state.
“If we believe that our government's
job is to make sure there's an even playing field for everyone, then
we should want to make sure and ensure that gay couples and same-sex
couples and heterosexual couples all have the same rights and all
have the same opportunities. This isn't a matter of fairness, it's a
matter of freedom. And it's a matter of empowering individuals to
live their best life and have the most amount of freedoms,” the
conservative Hoover says in the 30-second clip. (The video is
