Political commentator Margaret Hoover believes legalizing marriage for gay and lesbian couples is a matter of freedom, not fairness.

The 34-year-old Hoover, who is the great-granddaughter of former President Herbert Hoover, made her comments in a new video for The Four 2012, the nascent group working on marriage equality issues in the four states where it will be on the ballot this year – Maryland, Minnesota, Maine and Washington state.

“If we believe that our government's job is to make sure there's an even playing field for everyone, then we should want to make sure and ensure that gay couples and same-sex couples and heterosexual couples all have the same rights and all have the same opportunities. This isn't a matter of fairness, it's a matter of freedom. And it's a matter of empowering individuals to live their best life and have the most amount of freedoms,” the conservative Hoover says in the 30-second clip. (The video is embedded on this page.
