EMC Corporation on Wednesday announced
it would back Referendum 74, the Washington state ballot measure
which would uphold a gay marriage law approved by lawmakers.
“Creating an inclusive, respectful
and open culture at EMC has always been a priority, and we constantly
strive to promote equality in our workplace,” Sujal Patel,
president of EMC's Isilon Storage Division, said in a statement.
“Our support of the state's legislation that provides same-sex
couples with the right to civil marriage is another example of our
commitment to supporting – and delivering – benefits for domestic
partners.”
The Massachusetts-based Fortune 500
data storage company has more than 55,000 employees around the world.
Zach Silk, campaign manager for
Washington United for Marriage, welcomed EMC's endorsement.
“We are thrilled to have EMC's
support and the company joins a growing roster of leading employers,
not just in Washington, but across the country and the globe, who
support marriage equality and our work to approve Referendum 74,”
he
said in a statement.
