Days
Of Our Lives is planning an anti-gay bullying storyline
for Freddie Smith's Sonny Kiriakis, who arrived in Salem last summer.
Kiriakis, the NBC daytime soap's first
gay character in its 47-year-long history, will be the victim of a
violent attack.
“Sonny was picked on for being gay
early on,” Smith, 24, told the San Diego Gay & Lesbian News.
“So it has developed slowly, like it does in real life. And
what's interesting is that the bullying is being done by different
people.”
According to the Windy
City Times, Kiriakis' attacker will be an old
friend who thinks Kiriakis is attempting to turn him gay.
Romance could also be in the offing for
Kiriakis, Smith said.
“Sonny has a romance coming up,” he
told the San
Diego Gay & Lesbian News. “You've got to check out
Sonny's big storyline.”
“I think it's one of the best gay
storylines ever,” he added.
Before joining Days Of Our Lives,
Smith played the romantic interest to Trevor Donovan's all American
Teddy on the CW's 90210.
